What is Petya ? Is it Really a Ramsomware or it is a Wiper?

What is this fuss all around about Petya? Is it like WannaCry or worse than that? Computer viruses often spread farther than their creators intended, but the attackers had complete control over where they planted Petya initially, and they chose to plant it by some of the most central institutions in Ukraine. Between it is a proud moment if you do not use Microsoft windows because much like Wanna Cry, Petya can infect only Microsoft windows system.

What is petya?
Petya is a “complex” cyberattack – which is going by a range of different names – locks down computers and asks for a $300 ransom in the form of Bitcoin to make it work again.

What it does?
It is a wiper and not a Ramsomware . Even if you pay Bitcoins worth $300  you cannot recover data back. Because of this, a script started building in cyber-security teams that is it a trial version of anything big?

People take little time to grasp that secret which can be verified by the fact that only Bitcoins worth $10000 is the total amount that was recovered by creator till now date.

Where its existence exist?
Petya is spreading around like “crazy” through networks from European countries to the US.

Recent reports state that the existence of Petya was found in Asia when it stops all operations at JawaharLal Nehru port trust,  India’s biggest container port, was unable to load or unload because of the attack because it cannot detect which package belong to whom.

Petya is for Ukraine only?
Petya has a strong relation to Ukraine and it is still a mystery that Petya is only for infecting Ukraine or the whole world. Till now it has infected infrastructure, including an electricity supplier, the central bank, the state telecom, and an airport of Ukraine.

As I stated  “Computer viruses often spread farther than their creators intended, but the attackers had complete control over where they planted it initially, and they chose to plant it by some of the most central institutions in Ukraine”.

60 percent of the systems infected by the Petya ransomware were located within Ukraine, far more than anywhere else.
